When building out your kitchen, you will want to start with nonstick cookware. Besides the obvious benefits of quicker cleanup, nonstick cookware allows you to cook without oils or fats leading to healthier meals.

The main staple of your nonstick cookware will generally be a frying pan which will be the most versatile pan in your collection. You can use it to cook a wide-range of meals like moist chicken, fluffy omelettes, and roasted pork chops.

We Recommend

After hours of research and evaluation of every external review, we narrowed our list to those that got the highest ratings across the various sites. After comparing the quality of surface materials, features, expected lifespan, and price of the pan — the FOMOPOP Top Pick for the best nonstick frying pan is the Cuisinart Contour Hard Anodized 10-Inch Open Skillet.

Cuisinart Contour Hard Anodized Open Skillet 10-inch

We fell in love with the Cuisinart Contour pan for all its innovative features, but our main highlights are its durability, coating quality, comfortable handle and heat distribution.

The anodized aluminum body provides resilience to bumps against your gas stovetop. It’s unique coating enables the pan to not only be heated safely to 500 degrees (other max out at 400), but also to go straight from hot to a cold rinse without damage to the surface. Cuisinart also claims you can freeze food directly in the pan, although we haven’t found a reason to do this.

As the “contour” name implies, the contoured shape of the handle allows for easy maneuvering, even with a full and heavy pan. The shape of the pan with its flared lip allows you to easily transfer foods to plates and pour liquids without making a mess. The handle is attached with rivets so you’ll never have to worry about screws getting loose, but the rivets can make cleaning slightly more tedious as they aren’t coated, so food can stick. The handle stays cool when cooking on the stovetop, but you’ll still need mitts if you put the pan in the oven.

At under $40, the Cuisinart Contour pan is one of the least expensive pans we highlight in our nonstick guide. With it’s limited lifetime warranty, and nearly 650 reviews on Amazon and 4.6 out of 5 stars, we’re not alone in our opinion on this great pan.

If you’re looking for something that is scratch-resistant or dishwasher safe then our Top Pick isn’t for you, but we have suggestions that will work for you.

Scratch-Resistant

If you plan to share your pan with children or roommates, you should consider the scratch-resistant Scanpan Classic. While scratch-resistant ceramic pans are not traditionally more durable than teflon pans, they are the only nonstick pans that can withstand metal utensils.

Dishwasher-Safe

We recommend the Tramontina Professional pan if you need an affordable, dishwasher-safe nonstick pan. The Scanpan Classic is also dishwasher safe, but is more expensive. While the Tramontina is not quite as sturdy as the Cuisinart Contour (our Top Pick) and is limited to 400 degrees in the oven (as compared to 500 degrees), it is the best option if you want to be able to toss dirty pans straight into the dishwasher.

Nonstick Comparison

Nonstick cookware can range from $30 for an entry-level pan to $100+ for high-end. Generally as the cookware gets more expensive, the main difference is the coating of the pan itself.

Nonstick Frying Pans Traditional Frying Pans
Use little to no oils for low fat healthy cooking Oils and fats coat food leading to higher calorie meals
Food simply releases from surface without scraping Added oil, butter, or other lubricants needed
Clean up without harsh chemicals or scouring pads Soaking and scrubbing often required
Ideal for eggs, lean meats, and pancakes Recipes including sugar, milk or eggs require skillful preparation
No need for high output high heat cook tops Require higher temperature for searing /crisping

These days we have lots of choices when it comes to nonstick surfaces, but in general they fall into two categories: PTFE’s (Polytetrafluoroethylene’s) and Ceramic. PTFE coatings are synthetically produced and can be found with or without PFOA’s.

While there’s plenty on the internet to scare you away from PTFE and PFOA based coatings after ample research we’ve not uncovered any compelling evidence of negative health implications.

To be holistic we reviewed both types of pans and the main takeaway is that PTFE’s generally last longer but Ceramic coatings can handle higher heat.

What to Expect

Nonstick cookware is game changing when it comes to healthy cooking. Not only does it reduce the need to add butter or oil, it helps minimize burning.

The lifespan of the pans will also differ based on the pan you buy. Nonstick pans however are not lifelong purchases and will inevitably wear out, just like the tires on a car. While $100+ pans will last longer, they won’t last significantly longer than mid-range priced pans. To maximize the lifespan of your nonstick pans — it is important to avoid using nonstick sprays, high heat, and rough cleaning products.
